From Our Archives III: Konrad Helbig. In the Mediterranean.

Photographic Explorations 1954 -1985

1 March 2018 - 10 June 2018

In conjunction with the Deutsche Fotothek Dresden and Stiftung F.C. Gundlach Hamburg

For the photographer, publicist and (lecturer-)traveler Konrad Helbig (1917-1986) Sicily was a place of longing. After first coming to the island in 1954, he returned here over and over again until he died, capturing the land and its people as well as Sicily's art and culture in more than 17,000 photographs. Beginning in 1956 he published the pictures in various books and articles. In addition, they served him as a basis for the very successful slide lectures he held in countless German cities. Besides fascinating shots of antique and medieval monuments and works of art in Sicily, he took many photos of the land and its people. These images document the everyday life of the persons and show places and landscapes of a Sicily that has, in parts, changed drastically since Konrad Helbig's last visits. The exhibition is the ideal supplement to the exhibition devoted to the antique cultures of Sicily and the Mediterranean area shown at the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn, "Sunken into the Sea. Sicily and Underwater Archaeology".
