The Romans in Bonn

The new Hands-On Area at the LVR-LandesMuseum!

Build. Play. Dig. Learn.

In the new "Hands-On" area at the LVR-LandesMuseum Bonn, children and grown-ups can play, and in doing so, experience how Bonn and the Rhine landscape looked 2,000 years ago. More than 2,000 years ago, Roman troops reached the Rhine and set up a legionary fort in the northern part of Bonn. This place is still easily recognizable on city maps today. Soon thereafter, outskirts known as "CANABAE" grew up around the fort, near where the Kennedy Bridge stands now, and there was a settlement ("VICUS") in the area where today the Museum Mile is located. With the aid of construction plans, here you and your children can take blocks to reconstruct Roman buildings with original details, using your imagination evoke the antique landscape, and reenact everyday Roman life with costumes, dishes, and food. The Hands-On area "The Romans in Bonn" is open to all on Sundays (with the exception of the excavation site) from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., with an educator colleague on hand to assist. The rest of the time, the Hands-On Area is reserved exclusively for school classes, children's birthday parties, and groups who have booked in advance.

Sponsored by: Sparkasse KölnBonn. Funded by the PS-special purpose revenue of the Lottery of the Rheinische Sparkassen - und Giroverbandes PS Sparen und Gewinnen.
